WILLIAM VOLTZ W9HW
March 19,1905 - JULY 23,1997
Story by N9ZIP, When I purchased my first home, Bill was my next door neighbor. He would often invite me into his shack to show off all his gear. On the wall, under the window, was a spark gap keyer that had blacked the wall from the sparks. He was a member of the Michigan City Amateur Radio Club. One of his stories was when he was first getting into the hobby, he was in his shack tunning his spark gap transmitter, when he a heard a cw call that was calling him. Come to find out his tuning signal made to England and he was one of a few that had made a contact across the great pond at that time. In the picture, Bill is on his back poarch. His tower behind him, where the base still stands today. Bill is why I wanted to become a Amateur.
